Thursday June 20 2019

Today is the last day of spring. The summer solstice is at 11:55 AM Friday, but it feels like summer has arrived already. It is once again warm and muggy to start the day. Once again we will have showers and thunderstorms develop in the afternoon and tonight. But the storm risk remains scattered. That means about 30% chance your area will get it. The difference is that there is more support for any of those storms to turn severe. That is why our risk area has elevated to the ‘Slight Risk’ for most of our area.

Severe Storm Risk

Severe Storm Qualifier:

  • Winds over 58 mph
  • Large hail over 1 inch diameter
  • Isolated Tornado

Please note that as we get closer, these are potential alerts to be issued.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: A broad area and window with a 4 to 6 hour time frame. This means it MIGHT happen.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A focused area like a county usually with a 30 to 60 minute time frame. This means it IS HAPPENING NOW.

Tornado Warning: A focused area and time frame. This would list towns in a likely path within a 15 to 45 minute window.

This is just a guide for how storms may develop. This model is not perfect and will need to be updated mid day.

Note: Some early storms more likely around the Maryland/PA line.  Then we watch Southern Virginia to split two clusters of storms across central and southern Maryland in the evening.
