Tuesday June 18 2019
It sis warm, humid, and we have some rain already this morning. All of this stickiness in the air just needs a trigger to let loose. There will be more showers and slow moving storms on soggy ground, so it won’t take much to cause local flooding. As a result a Flash Flood Watch has been issued for much of our area today. Most of the action will be after 2 PM. While some storms could turn severe, the main risk today is for locally heavy rain.
Morning Set Up
This is all in response to a stalled front across the northern edge of our region that is expected to drift southward today. This is a pattern that will be with us for the next few days. Wherever this is set up when storms fire is where the heaviest rain will be. There is some computer guidance (posted below) that suggests the front might be in southern Maryland when that happens later today. So the flooding potential along with strong storms could include Southern Maryland.

The NAM 3 KM model has led the charge showing the flare up of storms in central VA, passing metro Washington into southern Maryland. This is south of the Flash Flood Watch region, so we need to see where the rain sets up when it develops.
