We are about to have our nicest weather of the summer with a cool breeze, drop in humidity, and no rain expected for the next week! That would be enough for news, but the big weather headline continues to be record Hurricane Lane hitting Hawaii. The winds have weakened as it is turning north towards the island chain, but still a strong Category 4 storm with winds of 145 mph this morning. It is moving to the Northwest and the National Hurricane Center forecast keeps it to the west of the islands. But the HWRF Model below has it turning in for a direct hit.
While Lane will weaken, the rainfall potential widespread is up to 20 inches to more of with the enhancement from the mountains. Hilo has already received over 12 inches of rain. So in addition to the waves and surge, flooding and mudslides are the prime reason for their hurricane warning. Tropical Storm Force Winds extend 140 miles away.
