Monday May 8 – A Frost Advisory is in effect for inland areas of northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania through 9 AM Tuesday May 9. These are the normally colder areas inland from I-95 and the Chesapeake Bay. Near the water in in the cities temps should stay near or above 40ºF. A Freeze Warning is in effect in the colder mountain regions.

The core of the cold air is settling into the region now.   Despite this afternoon’s temps barely making the lower 60s in the city, they stayed in the 50s inland. The dew points (a measure of moisture in the air) has been in the upper 20s. That represents the coldest the air can get in the morning, but likely won’t reach the level. With the winds settling down under a clearing sky tonight, the coldest temperatures should be upon us Tuesday morning as many areas will spend a few hours in the 30s.  It’s at ground level where the air can be colder than the thermometers and allow for frost to develop. This can damage tender vegetation.

Suggestion:

Bring potted plants indoors. For early planting, cover and secure with a garbage bag or tarp.

This is why many gardeners suggest NOT planting tomatoes, etc until after Mother’s Day. See more about the average and latest frost and freeze dates/Map for our region here.

Potential Low Temperatures:

The NAM 3KM and HRRR Models differ slightly, but both show the colder areas spending a few hours in the 30s.

Weather Notes:

  • Afternoon temps should stay in the upper 50s and lower 60s through Mother’s Day.
  • Low temps for the remainder of the week should be a little milder.
  • Mother’s Day- There is a risk for rain. I will have more in my next update.

Get the award winning Kid Weather App I made with my oldest son and support our love for science, weather, and technology. Our 3 year anniversary of the release and our contribution to STEM education is this November. It has been downloaded in 60 countries, and works in both temperature scales. With your support we can expand on the fun introduction to science and real weather.
