Freezing Rain and Winter Weather Tonight Then Arctic Blast

Sunday December 11 – Flurries have arrive. The radar shows it and the atmosphere finally supported the flakes falling and reaching the ground this morning. We have a stickage and a coating is building at my place. This first round of flakes is just a morning thing, but will set many on the north side of Baltimore in the wintery mood. The main storm on the way will pass to our north and bring in warmer air, but cold will remain in place to possibly cause problems to the west and north of Baltimore. During the week we will watch the Polar Vortex push even colder air our way.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for southern Pennsylvania until 4 AM Monday. This includes Adams, York, and Lancaster Counties. Up to an inch of snow and or icy glaze expected before warmer air and rain arrive.

A Freezing Rain Advisory is in place for western Maryland west of Frederick until 10 AM for more of the icy mix.

The cold air is a tricky thing and needs to be watched as the icy part could extend farther into central Maryland north and west of Baltimore. There may be some more snow and icy mix tonight in Frederick, Carroll, northern Baltimore, Harford, and Cecil Counties.

I will show the snow projection maps in my next post. I think the Canadian is still too high and the GFS is too low. But a dusting to an inch is possible in north central Maryland and southern PA.

Temperatures

Watching the thermometer today closely will help identify the depth of the cold air. This in turn will help determine how long the cold will hold.

This did a better job with the light snow this morning, so let’s take a look at what it shows tonight. Here we see more of the snow and wintery mix with temperature near of just above freezing.

The GFS Model remains less impressive with more rain. First a look at the mid level winds pushing in the warmer air ahead of the storm.

Temperature Outlook- Even Colder!

Yesterday I wrote about the Polar Vortex sliding just north of New England and pushing real arctic air in next week. You can see that highlighted here. The cold air looks colder with each model run. I had suggested the models have trouble identifying extreme weather and may not have given full credit to this air mass yet. Below you can see the forecast temperatures even colder with highs in Baltimore in the 20s at the end of the week.
