snow_syracuseTuesday November 22 – While we are just starting to climb out of the first cold snap of the season, it would be wrong to ignore the major snow event that hit just north. In fact many traveling may be surprise to see how much snow is on the ground as the drive through Pennsylvania and New York, and there could be more into Thanksgiving while we get a little bit of rain.

radarIt is still snowing! If you are driving to central New York for the holidays today, the roads may be slick, especially north of Scranton, PA on I-81.

I was looking through the snow reports and saw that one of the big winners was my old stomping grounds with one persistent band of Lake Effect snow across central NY. Both of these cities I had worked in…

  • Binghamton, NY: 24.2″
  • Syracuse, NY: 21.9″

I should point out that Binghamton only had 32 inches of snow all of last winter. That was well below average for them… and almost surpassed in this one event.

There were many places in the 20 to 30 inch range and some places in the snow belt pushing 3 Ft.

Pennsylvania got in on it too.

  • Scranton got 10.5″- which was a record!

Ski Areas:

  • Snowshoe reporting 5″ of natural snow. But I was there and a lot was blowing around and tough to measure
  • 7 Springs reporting 2″ of natural snow and 8″ machine made
  • Wisp is not reporting at this time, but they got at least 2 inches.

Thanksgiving Outlook

The temperatures will moderate as the next weather event will bring in the threat of rain. However, if you are traveling into this snow zone, there will be more wintry weather Wednesday night and Thursday across northern Pennsylvania and central New York to New England.

Locally we will be on the edge, with only a few showers of rain that could make some Turkey Trots damp. However it will not be too bad around our region. A better chance of rain will arrive Friday.
