Tropical Storm Hermine Inland (video): Impact Through Labor Day

Friday September 2 – Hermine hit Florida overnight as a hurricane and the first such landfall in the state in 11 years. There were reports of storm surge over 10 feet, and daylight will bring a better view of the likely devastating flooding impact. Below is video showing the heavy rain and strong winds at landfall. As the storm continues to move inland, the winds will weaken. They were down to 70 mph this morning. The track inland will eventually bring it back off the coast, and then it may stall east of Ocean City for a few days. The biggest impact in our region will be very high tides, including in the Chesapeake. Also major erosion and heavy rain flooding by the beaches. The heaviest rains will be along the coast, while inland could remain dry. Tropical Storm Watch still in place for Maryland, Delaware, and NJ beaches.

Timing: Some showers may arrive Saturday afternoon. The closest pass will be Saturday night into Sunday morning… then we watch how it meanders off of the coast beyond Labor Day.

Track depends on Cold Front and High Pressure

We will get a pleasant day today with sunshine, low humidity, and temperatures between 75°F and 80°F. The front that moved through will play a role in helping to guide the storm, and nothing is etched in stone. That is why forecast maps show a wider cone of uncertainty after day 3. So while the center of Hermine looks to pass south and east of Maryland, watch how it stalls and may wander back west during the weekend.
