Tuesday August 30 – We have a few more very warm days ahead of us just as the discussion of the impact on schools heats up in Maryland. Governor Hogan is expected to make an announcement on Wednesday in Ocean City of a mandate for Maryland schools to open after Labor Day next year. But around the corner now is a true taste of Fall that will arrive by the end of this week. The flip from highs in the 90s to 70s and lows in the 50s will make it feel like an Autumn preview as Labor Day weekend begins. But that cooling should only last a few days. It will time out just right to protect us from two tropical systems. See the forecast slider maps below.
Here is a quick look at the upper level maps showing the flip of air masses between this morning and the end of the week. The cold front that will mark that arrival does not look too active, but a chance of a thunderstorm on Thursday is possible.

Tropics
There has been no change in intensity of Tropical Depressions Eight and Nine, but both have the potential to develop. The southern system looks stronger, but both will follow a path that clips the Carolinas, but stays away from the Mid Atlantic. Hurricane Gaston has weakened a little with 100 mph winds. This is more than a thousand miles off of the coast, so no worries.
The one thing to consider is the long range outlook for the southern system now identified as TD Nine, that could stall off the coast and provide strong waves and rip currents for the beaches on Labor Day.
While temperatures will be warming back a little, if you plan to spend the holiday weekend at the beach, odds are that swimming in the ocean will be limited.
Forecast Maps
The next two names on the Atlantic tropical list are Hermine and Ian. The order of naming will be determined by which one of these two organizes first. That could be today or tomorrow.
