June 21 – Maybe it was National Shelfie not Selfie Day? The storms that erupted over central Maryland meant business and left a trail of destruction in its wake. Most of the problems were in Howard County which may have justified the Tornado Warning they were under at the time. I will make another post about the storm reports, hail, and power outages. This is all about the sky views that were so impressive, the middle of the day in some places was darker than midnight last night with the full moon on the summer solstice. This same complex held together and made for an equally impressive display over Ocean City.
The shelf cloud or shelfie as it is fondly referred to, is a low handing wall ahead of a strong to severe storm. It can signify the gust of colder air being pushed ahead of the cell. It can also show a blue or turquoise color that is often indicative of large hail. We had plenty of that to show later as well.
