February 10 – The lingering snow last night dropped more than a coating of fresh snow, but did reach the areas that missed out on the action Tuesday. All of my forecast maps included ‘through Wednesday’, but I was so eager to focus on the weekend Polar Vortex that I did not pay too much attention to anything other than the temperatures. So I hope you were prepared for an icy start. Many if not most area schools are delayed with some closings as well. That is the result of the coating to 2 inches in spots.
Temperatures are about three degrees colder than Tuesday morning and that is all it takes. A great display of the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere for all kids that get to sleep in this morning.
Below is a look at the brief thaw for some today. The improvement will be with us between 10 AM and noon, but another snow shower is possible this afternoon with the upper level energy. Then take a look at the arrival of the arctic air. This will come with some light snow Friday night and Saturday, laying out the white carpet for temps to reach near zero Sunday morning.

Weekend Snow And Arctic Arrival
Since many systems lately have been farther west than forecast… I would consider that coastal on Friday night possibly clipping Delmarva.
Near Record Cold Sunday
I think it’s possible that we will end up colder than what is shown here. Both days could remain in the teens with lows near or below zero! Last February (2015) we had seven days at BWI with lows in the single digits. Two days had record cold afternoons with a high of 18°F (March 19 and 20). We also set two record lows of 1°F on the 20th and 2°F on the 21st. It may be that kind of cold again. Keep these records in mind
Saturday Feb 13: Record Low = 1°F in 1983; Coldest Daily High 10°F in 1899
Sunday Feb 14: Record Low = -2°F in 1979; Coldest Daily High 18°F in 1916

Temperature Outlook
I do not think this model is doing the arctic boas justice. So the weekend temperatures may very well be colder with highs staying in the teens, especially on Sunday.
