January 3- We may not have gotten the record high today, but it was plenty warm with plenty of rain to wash away out recent winter hit. The blizzard of 2016 may be a recent memory, but the grass is starting to show. The result of leftover snow, cold ground, lots of rain.. and warm moist air tonight has resulted in thick fog. This Dense Fog Advisory extends through Thursday morning as visibility will be under 1/4 mile making it difficult to drive at normal speed with ease. So expect a slow morning commute.
We have a few chances at snow over the next week. First will be on Friday morning along the lower Eastern Shore and coastal areas. Not much expected, but a signal of winter fighting back. After that, we watch one storm jump off the coast Sunday, but what follows will be a large upper elbe pattern shift. This trough in the jet stream will be cool and unsettled. There are signals in the atmosphere that ‘something’ is trying to form, but at this time the subtle ingredients are not showing well. I don’t see a major event like our blizzard, we a few days with snow will be with us next week. The outlook now times out for Tuesday and Wednesday for something. But I would not lock into any more details other than what I can show below:
First Up: Friday
There could be flurries reaching back near Annapolis and the Western Shore.. but the main action will be on Delmarva
Upper Air Pattern Next Week:
This is a snapshot of a developing and deepening trough. There will be plenty of energy around it, trying to spawn some snow development.
Surface Features:
I am sticking with the GFS Model because ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. This latest projection is less defined than the prior run, but still shows some area of Low Pressure forming overhead Tuesday with more development for New England. There is another wave to follow with a chance at snow on Wednesday. Again, I am not locked into the specifics. In fact I think a more organized Low will form, but the timing is uncertain in the window of Tuesday to Wednesday. But it will NOT be a repeat of our last event. That I can say with confidence.
