WinterWeatherAdvisoryJan17
January 17 2016 – A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for Talbot and Caroline Counties in Maryland plus Kent and Sussex Counties in Delaware and southern New Jersey. This extends to 7 PM with a range of 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation. Also, roads are getting covered as the heavier snow has dropped the temperatures. Faith in the Flakes my friends. See timeline and more notes below.

Snow Sunday SalisburyFinally we broke the seal on the snow cap this winter! Now we need to consider that where it is heavy, colder, and sticking.  Widespread snow has reached up from the south to include much of central Maryland and the Delmarva. This southern system still has the bulk of the energy passing south and east, which means southern Maryland, Eastern Shore, and Beaches get the most. The caveat is that temperatures were above freezing. This is why accumulation has been a tough question to answer. But the heavier snow has brought many areas down.  At noon, Salisbury reports 32°F with “Heavy Snow”.  At this point just getting coverage on the grass is visually pleasing. Snow is now overtaking the warmer pavement for stickage in some places.

Snow will stick farther north near metro Baltimore. I would plan for less than 1 inch there, but enough to make the ground white and some roads slick.

See notes and snow amounts below the radar simulation slider.

Radar Simulation:

Note the moderate to heavy snow passing south and east of Baltimore.

Also- Snow showers will arrive this evening with arctic air. Temps will drop back into the teens and lower 20s by Monday morning.

SnowOceanCityAccounting for some melting…

  • Southern Maryland, Eastern Shore, Beaches, and Delaware should average 1″-3″. Some higher amounts.
  • Metro Annapolis to Baltimore: Dusting To 1 inch:
  • “North and west”: Dusting to 1 inch? Ironically the northern areas are warmer with less snow. Temps will get colder in the higher terrain. So some slick roads possible in Carroll County and the Hereford Zone.

Notes:

My concern is the timing. After 3PM, the lower sun angle lets the snow enforce the cold more even on the northern, lighter snow fringe near metro Washington, Annapolis, and Baltimore. That is when we approach the ‘crunch hour’, when stickage can take over and lead to travel problems. This could be earlier on north facing areas that can block the southern exposure via hills, buildings, or trees.

Icy Tonight: Temps will be crashing and anything wet will freeze. I know we had this threat early in the week, but there was not enough moisture to be a problem. This is already more impressive. Salting roads- recommended this evening.
