January 17- Yes, snow is in our future today! Surprise? Yesterday my oldest son turned 10, but I feel this is like a birthday gift for all patient and desperate snow lovers who held their Faith in the Flakes. That storm I mentioned last week with hesitation, was on, then off, then on again just a few days ago… then back off. It was January 13th when I bought back in and posted this article showing the second weekend storm with snow. But it was the GFS model after all. It was the only model showing snow today, and it didn’t even believe itself. Even the sturdy European Model didn’t have snow…. But now, perhaps with NOAA’s 4 fold increase in computing power, this model was on to something. Not perfect, but the best notion of something reaching us today. While I lost trust in it, I still kept the chance for flurries and light snow in.
Well, the southern storm was responsible for at least 4 tornadoes in Florida and is getting a little push north and snow will spread throughout the day. But temperature should stay above freezing for most near and south of Baltimore, so stickage might be held to the grassy areas while most roads will be wet. Some heavier snow could overtake the warmer roads… That is the main question. The heaviest snow will actually fall on southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore. Here is the quick look at the simulated radar. Please see more notes and the story on the cold air below.
Why no snowfall map?
Due to the warmer temperatures during the day, stickage and accumulation is in question. But A dusting to an inch or two is possible.
Temperatures:
- The freezing line will stay north.
- Stickage north of Baltimore is possible mid to late afternoon, but the heaviest snow will be south and east.
- Freezing temps arrive after sunset.
The Water Vapor Satellite shows support for this snow reaching north. The baroclinic leaf I highlighted here is a reflection of the influence this storm can have in the atmosphere. I watch for this ahead of coastal storms to show have far north and west moisture can reach. This is well inland from metro Baltimore.
There might be more snow on the way with the arctic air and upper level energy Tuesday. I will have more on that by this evening. Just enjoy today’s surprise event and I will continue to update any changes…especially tracking the roads conditions.
