Screen Shot2016-01-11 05_51_15After hitting the 60s on Sunday, you heard the wind and the temperatures have crashed. We wake up in the 20s this morning with wind chills in the teens. The wind will remain gusty, as temps only rise into the mid 30s.  Then we set up the (ahem) big event.  Tuesday will bring a band of snow, and while light it is the first such type of event of this season. El Nino has not been kind to snow lovers, and this clipper will mainly pass to our north. But there is support aloft to carry snow over the mountains. The timing: Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday morning.

Below are two sliders: We can get more specific in my next report. But the main idea is the timing. What arrives Tuesday afternoon might start as flurries in southern PA hours before anything reacher central Maryland. Expect a wintry mix around the Bay and Eastern Shore towards sunset, which is now just after 5 PM.  The best chance for any stickage, will be Tuesday evening. Some road impact possible, mainly north and west of the beltway. But the roads will be working off of some heat of the day.

Note: Most likely timeline in central MD: Snow between 4 PM Tuesday until 1 AM Wednesday

Vorticity: Upper Level Energy

The vort max, or peak upper level spin, will pass south of Baltimore as it rides through Virginia. That is a prime location to get the max hit locally. While the surface maps above don’t show much, I see the reflection of this energy keeping snow showers past midnight. But the energy lifts north and we should be dry at sunrise Wednesday.

Total Accumulation: Range from a dusting to 1 inch. Up to 2 inches in the higher hills north and west.
