RecordLowDec25If someone says 2015 was the warmest Christmas, they are wrong. But they are technically correct at the same time if we look at the math. The high temperature today was 71°F at 12:37 PM, just missing the record high for December 25 set in 1964. So technically that was the hottest on record. But, digging a little deeper, Baltimore did set a record today. A record for the warmest minimum (or low) temperature for this date. See more below and why there is a case for this day to rank higher than that 1964 Christmas.

The day started with a temperature at BWI of 61°F at midnight. As of 7 PM that is still today’s low temperature, as it is 63°F now. Even if we drop cooler, the former record warmest minimum was 48°F also set in 1964.

Hmm….

If we take the entire day average for that record 1964 Christmas, Baltimore was 60°F. This day in 2015 would have to have a low temperature also of 48°F to have a cooler average of 59.5°F.  But honestly, that is not going to happen.

We may actually set another record on Sunday with a forecast to reach 70°F again. The record high for December 27th is 65F set in 1949. If we get it, it would be our 4th record high temperature for the month.  I know some would like to blame global warming over El Nino, but think of this: Baltimore set 4 record low max and daily min temperatures this same year, back in February. How about that!

  • 18°F the coldest daily high was set on Feb 15, 16, 19, and 20 2015.
  • 6°F the record low on Feb 15
  • 5F the record low on Feb 16

So, here’s my take on the records:

We are guaranteed to have the warmest minimum temperature for Christmas on record. With that, we also secure the daily average temperature for this Christmas will end up warmer than that of 1964. So technically, this is the warmest Christmas Day in Baltimore.

Normal?

  • Average daily high: 43°F (today was +28 degrees)
  • Average daily low: 26°F (today as of this post was +35 degrees)
  • Daily average was +32 degrees from ‘normal)
