snowwv1This was the scene in West Virginia this week. It snowed there, briefly. December 5th used to mean snow for Baltimore.  In fact in 2001 the record high of 75°F, but a year later in 2002 Baltimore’s BWI measured the record snowfall for the date at 7.4 inches. We spent nearly decade with almost every year displaying the first storm on this date. But that has not happened since 2011 (see the chart below).  Consider the past two winters that had regional ski resorts opening their slopes on the day after Thanksgiving. That seems far fetched this year, which some blame on El Nino and the warm outlook for much of this month.  So, the slopes are not opened yet, but the photos below may revive the Faith in the Flakes for fellow snow lovers. You can see my new shirt collection below the slide show.

I want to thank Josh Brenneman who brought this to my attention. The Allegheny Mountain Region and Snowshoe Mountain and Canaan Valley showed off their photos when the last cold front brought some snow to their peaks. Check out these images and you will see a mix of natural snow, machine made on the slopes, and some rime ice. That last part is a built up of ice crystals on the tree branches due to thick fog in subfreezing temperatures. That helps add to the full white surroundings. Below the slider I’ve added two separate images to show that rime ice on the ridge topes generally close to the  4,000 ft level.
