Beware the ides of September? That’s not what Shakespeare wrote, and weather is not what he had in mind. But this Tuesday is the middle of the month and this morning we bounce off of the bottom. With longer nights, a clear sky, and light wind, temperatures overnight dropped a lot. More so away from the bay and the city. This is the time of year when urban areas hold on to more heat and coastal areas get warmth from the water. So temperatures can vary dramatically just before sunrise. Look at the 6 AM numbers and see a range from 40s to near 60F. With that in mind, a 40 degree jump is in reference to the cooler spots.
- Sunrise at 6:47 AM
- Sunset at 7:15 PM
- Loss of almost 3 minutes of daylight from the day before.
These numbers are from area home weather stations. The official 6AM readings:
- 51F at BWI
- 65F at Baltimore’s Maryland Science Center
- 46F in Frederick
Here’s a wider view of the region
The winds will shift to the west or southwest by evening, helping to pump in warmer air. That will get most areas in central Maryland and southern Pennsylvania up into the 40s. After today, we should easily get back to the 80s for the rest of the week.
Severe Clear
It’s an ironic term we have used in many weather departments. When High Pressures is in control and there is virtually no active weather to speak of… the sky is clear and there is an absence of severe activity. Thus, our week ahead. We had two very wet days last week, breaking a 16 day dry spell. Now we enter another stretch of dry weather.
