Heavy rain has been sitting over southern Pennsylvania this morning. Once cell appears to have stalled dumping over 2.5″ in one hour reported by a spotter in York Springs. Doppler Radar has estimated over 3 inches in 90 minutes and a total over 4 inches near Franklintown and York Springs in northwestern York County. This has prompted the National Weather Service to post a Flash Flood Warning for York County until 2:30 PM, insisting residents move to higher ground. Much of southern Pennsylvania is also under a Flash Flood Watch until 6PM. That means more flooding could occur, but is not happening at this time.
Dopple Radar imagery suggest more flooding could occur and this is of interest in Maryland where rain is building on the south end and feeding back north. Please pay attention for any more alerts that are likely this afternoon. I think after my suggestion that many after school sports could be affected will stand. Look out for updates, as I may have to pass that along to my soccer team soon.
I would pay close attention across southern PA and central to northern Maryland as this develops. Flash Flooding can happen quickly, without notice as heavy rain flows downstream, and some drains get clogged with leaves. Merely 6 to 12 inches of water can pick up a car and truck. If the road looks covered, “Turn Around! Don’t Drown!” You may not realize how deep it is.
