Lightning_July15_6This collection of photos and time lapse video from the talented Tim Shahan is a pleasant surprise. A few nights ago, we were tracking severe storms rolling through the Ohio Valley and a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for central Maryland. During that evening the storms seemed to fade while crossing the mountains, but I had pointed out a circulation to focus on for possible enhancement near the Chesapeake Bay. Needless to say, Tim messaged me asking what time and direction to focus on since he had the time to set up his camera for the light show.  After a few messages, I finally wrote him and said that perhaps it might not be worth staiying up past midnight.

Then… After the Watch was cancelled… after midnight the storms erupted north of Baltimore.  I wrote Tim saying that maybe north was the focus after all, and he pointed his camera that way from his perch on Harbor Court. What you see below is the result and I am glad he went with his gut and stayed up after all. The timing was after 1 AM Wednesday. He has a special technique pausing just long enough for the top lightning strike, and gabbing those individual images as well. See the slide show of seven below his video. The storms resulted in yet another round of heavy rain and local flooding just keeping with the trend of our record June rainfall.
